Split System Course Purpose
The UEE20120 – Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems is a training course that caters to electricians, 3rd and 4th year electrical apprentices, as well as non-electrical tradespersons who wish to broaden their formal qualifications and enhance their skills.
This course is designed to meet the requirements for workers who wish to apply for a Restricted Refrigerant Handling Licence (RSS03) with the Australian Refrigeration Council.
The air conditioning course covers training that can be applied to various types of air conditioning systems, such as wall hung, floor and ceiling suspended, cassette and ducted fan coil systems, as well as water heating heat pump systems.
Please note that this training does not include competencies required for service, repair, maintenance, diagnostic/fault finding and electrical work, or the safe and proper installation of commercial refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump plant and equipment.
In completing this course, you will have the opportunity to pursue further studies that lead to additional qualifications. For more information on career pathways, please refer to our Career Pathways section below.
Air Conditioning Courses Townsville Prerequisites
To be able to undertake the UEE20120 – Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems course, you must satisfy one of the following prerequisites:
- For Electricians – Current Electrical Work Licence
- For 3rd or 4th year Electrical Apprentices – Who have Successful completion of the required units of competency outlined in the first year of an electrotechnology apprenticeship, and have at least two years of industry experience.
- Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is offered to non-electrical workers who wish to undertake this course who have a trade qualification in the following trades:
– Plumbers
– Gas fitters
- Trade Assistants currently working full-time for Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning companies (for a minimum period of 6-18 months) may also be eligible to complete this qualification with recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Course Outcome
Successfully completing one of our air conditioning courses will satisfy the requirements of the ARC, allowing you to apply for a restricted Refrigerant Handling Licence.
This Refrigerant Handling Licence is known as the Restricted Split System Air Conditioning Installation and Decommissioning Licence.
Career Pathways
If you successfully complete the UEE20120 – Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems, you may undertake further studies to gain additional qualifications. These include a Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (UEE32220) or other qualifications listed in the UEE Training Package.
