Split System Course Purpose
If you are an electrician, a 3rd or 4th year electrical apprentice, or tradesperson who wants to add to their skill set and attain a formal qualification, the UEE20120 Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems is the air conditioning course for you.
Our split system courses in Melbourne will show you how to perform the installation. as well as teach you about commissioning and decommissioning of single head, split air conditioning and heat pump systems using a prescribed routine.
Please note, our Melbourne air conditioning course deals only with systems that contain a maximum plant capacity of 18kW.
Our teaching staff are industry experts who will give you instruction in working with a large range of systems including wall mounted, floor and ceiling suspended, cassette and ducted fan coil systems as well as water heating pump systems.
It is important to note that the course is not for attaining competency in service, repair, maintenance, fault finding and electrical work, or commercial air conditioning, heat pump plant or refrigeration installation.

Course Prerequisites
To be able to undertake the UEE20120 – Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems course, you must satisfy one of the following prerequisites:
- For Electricians – Current Electrical Work Licence
- For 3rd or 4th year Electrical Apprentices – Who have Successful completion of the required units of competency outlined in the first year of an electrotechnology apprenticeship, and have at least two years of industry experience.
- Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is offered to non-electrical workers who wish to undertake this course who have a trade qualification in the following trades:
– Plumbers
– Gas fitters
- Trade Assistants currently working full-time for Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning companies (for a minimum period of 6-18 months) may also be eligible to complete this qualification with recognition of prior learning (RPL).
Victoria Only – Things to Know Beforehand
If you complete this split system installation course in Melbourne, you will need to meet the educational requirements to apply for a restricted refrigerant handling licence with the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) as well as the requirements to apply for a registration in mechanical services – restricted to split systems with the victorian Building Authority (VBA).
There are 2 types of occupational licence you can apply for with the VBA:
- Registration – Allows a person to work under an employer who is licenced with the VBA in that class of work.
- Licence – Allows a person to be a licensed practitoner who is able to certify their own work.
VBA requirements to be eligible to apply for registration in Mechanical Services – Restricted to Split System:
- Have a least two years experience in Mechanical Services – Restricted to split systems.
- Successfully completed the relevant VBA registration exams – theory and practical exam.
- Hold the relevant ARCtick refrigerant handling licence (RAC01 or RSS03)
- Have completed the VBA experience statement for the relevant class.
- Provide at least one VBA technical referee report completed by a supervisor who is licence is the class that you are applying for.
- Be registered in this class for at least 12 months.
- Hold or be eligible to hold professional indemnity insurance
- Meet the licensing education requirements, this is met by satisfying one of the following:
- Have successfully completed the prescribed ‘common’ licensing units (or sit the VBA equivalency exams), or
- Hold ESV registered electrical contractors (REC) registration.
- Successfully pass the VBA class specific licence exam.

Course Outcome & Career Pathways
Air Con Course Outcome
If you are successful in completing the course, you will be eligible to apply for a restricted Refrigerant Handling Licence or simply known as a ARC Licence (or air conditioning licence).
This will allow you to install and decommission split systems under 18kW, including ducted, wall hung, floor and ceiling mounted units.
The official name of this licence is the Restricted Split System Air Conditioning Installation and Decommissioning Licence.
Career Pathways
On completion of the split system air conditioning course, you may undertake further studies to gain additional qualifications.
These qualifications include a Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (UEE32220) or other qualifications listed in the UEE Training Package.
